PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Peter R. Welgan, Ph.D.
Dr. Welgan joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of California, Irvine in 1971. As a Psychophysiologist and specialist in Behavioral Medicine, he has conducted research in gastroenterology and psychophysiology for more than 35 years. In conjunction with his scientific interests, he has conducted weight management treatment programs since 1984. He is currently publishing his research on the psychophysiology of obesity.
In addition to his academic research, Dr Welgan has been Chief of Services, Department of Mental Health, Orange County, California and has maintained a clinical practice since 1975. He has a special clinical interest in the fields of obesity and weight management and has conducted obesity treatment programs in collaboration with medical colleagues since 1982. As a specialist in Behavioral Medicine, Dr. Welgan operates the WELGAN CENTER FOR BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE in which he has developed behaviorally based treatment programs for patients with a wide range of medical disorders.
Dr. Welgan operates the Research Foundation for the Advancement of Behavioral Medicine, a non-profit reasearch foundation for the study of psychological treatment of chronic medical disorders.
